How do you test Cannabis or Marijuana Potency in a Lab?
We use Gas Chromatography (GC) for our analysis because it’s the most accurate and cost effective. A Gas Chromatograph is used to separate and measure organic compounds (such as THC, CBD, and CBN) resulting in percentages of each Cannabinoid by molecular weight. Our Chromatographs are portable allowing for cannabis potency testing to be done on site, or off site at our lab. Mobile analysis produces results in minutes instead of days compared to traditional labs, but we can perform the tests back at our laboratory if you prefer.
Why is it important to measure THC, CBD, and CBN levels in Cannabis?
For patients, knowing the potency of any drug or medicine they take is a good idea. This is why potency is clearly marked on prescription drugs, over the counter medicine, and even wine and liquor bottles. Also, Cannabis is used to treat a variety of conditions. Knowing a specific ratio of cannabinoids that produces the desired effect for that individual improves efficacy of this medicine. Take note of the effect felt with higher CBD and CBN content compared to THC, as this can help determine the best strains for your needs.
